New Hotel Complex in Development for Indian Wells

A new hotel development that marries homes, condos and conventional hotel rooms is planned for Indian Wells.

Developers announced a proposal to build roughly 300 units – in the form of multi-bedroom villas as well as hotel rooms – in a project aimed at attracting multi-generational travelers who are looking for the space and privacy offered by a short-term rental with the careful standards seen in hotels.

The project, located near the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, is also planning the development of 60 to 80 condos, which can be managed by the hotel as vacation rentals.

“When we look at the way people are traveling, when we look at the evolution of the travel space, when we look at the rise of multi-generational travel, we think we’re on the cusp of another change in hospitality,” Phil Bates, a partner with TMC Group, a real estate development firm from Irvine, told residents in Indian Wells on Tuesday.

TMC Group officials, along with representatives from Fogelson Group, a Chicago-based real estate development firm, held a community meeting Tuesday at the Indian Wells Golf Resort to unveil the plans for the development proposed for the corner of Highway 111 and Miles Avenue near the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The project would occupy about 10 acres.

The development team anticipates construction beginning early next year, with completion in 2019 or 2020.

The hotel building with its 300 rooms could be up to 85 feet tall, and is proposed for the back of the site away from Highway 111. Its height was of a concern to some of the roughly 100 residents attending the forum Tuesday.

HISTORY: First airport in Palm Springs was built for El Mirador Hotel guests

“I have a problem with 85 feet,” remarked Andy Elchuck, who lives nearby.

When asked about views of Eisenhower Mountain and other areas, Bates said, “some will be compromised.”

Development plans for the site go back more than a decade when the Fogelson Group proposed building 129 residences and villas. The Fogelson Group is headed by Jerry Fogelson, well-known for his local philanthropy and generous contributions to the Palm Springs Art Museum. He also serves on the board for the Desert Town Hall speaker series.

The property's future was put into question again in 2014 when Phoenix developer Denny Ryerson was unable to finalize an agreement with YAM Capital that would have provided the money he needed to buy out Fogelson and meet critical deadlines connected to his proposed condo development in Indian Wells.

The project announcement comes as officials in La Quinta broke ground Monday at SilverRock, marking the start of development on a luxury resort that brings the Montage brand to the Coachella Valley. The project includes two luxury hotels which are scheduled to open simultaneously in October 2019.

How to Navigate Coachella 2017

How to Navigate Coachella 2017

Having lived just minutes from Coachella for years, I can personally attest that what she says is true! I would add to wear comfortable shoes that you don't mind getting dirty.

Article by CAROLINE RYDER/Palm Springs Life Magazine

PRE-PLANNING

The Coachella lineup is a dizzying, many-headed hydra filled with hidden treasures and dead ends. Spend a few days checking out the bands you haven’t heard of on Soundcloud, Spotify, YouTube, and iTunes, then print out your list of preferred acts and set times. Congratulations, you have a strategy, based in science.

Scalp sunburn is real, even if you have a lustrous head of hair, so the No. 1 item to plan for is a hat. Make sure it’s both a fun and practical hat you will actually wear. It won’t do your noggin any good if you’re just twirling it around in your fingers. Panama hats are always a good choice and pussy hats will probably be big this year. Shades are important too, but bring a cheap pair you don’t mind losing.

If you want to bring a change of clothes for cooler temperatures once the sun goes down, you can stash your things in on-site lockers. Reserve yours online at www.lockersonline.com — they will sell out before the festival. (Side note: If you buy vinyl, don’t stash it in your locker. It will melt.)

OTHER ESSENTIALS INCLUDE:

1. Chapstick.

2. Tissues or a small toilet roll in case the port-a-potties run low. Baby wipes for your dusty hands.

3. Ibuprofen for the crashing dehydration headache.

4. Benadryl for the dust allergies.

5. Your best sunglasses have no business being at Coachella.

6. Be sure to bring your medications in their original bottles, unless you want them confiscated by security.

7. Earplugs aren’t necessary, but if you’re not interested in throbbing post-festival tinnitus they’re a worthy investment. If you forgot yours, ask the security guards at the side of the stage if they have a free set.

8. Your phone charger is both your friend and your lifeline. Do not leave home without it. Oh, and sorry ravers — glow sticks are verboten.

TRANSPORTATION

The best way to get to Coachella is to buy a shuttle pass. Take an Uber or Lyft to your closest shuttle stop. You’ll get dropped off relatively close to the entrances.

If you drive yourself, you’ll inevitably get stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic along Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe streets. As far as presidents go, stick to the 19th century. If you find yourself getting more recent than, say, Eisenhower, you’re in the wrong place.

Unless you’re friends with a band and have the highly coveted artist parking pass, you will face the excruciating pit of torture known as Coachella parking. The golden rule: Always mark your position on a car-finder app or write down directions to your vehicle. You will 100 percent forget where you parked. Trust us on this.

Allow two hours between parking and getting inside the festival on day one.

ONCE YOU’RE INSIDE

Explore. If you have a VIP wristband, go to the rose garden and the lake! You’ll feel like the kids who got ahold of the keys to the country club.

It’s 5:55 p.m., your favorite band is playing, and you want to get up close. Just remember that there’s an unwritten rule at Coachella that says if you arrive late for the band’s show and try to push your way to the front, you’re a bad person. So, aim to arrive at least a half-hour early for the set (45 minutes early if you’re short). If you manage to reach the stage, let’s hope you’re not wearing open-toe shoes. Your feet will be crushed. And don’t be the person holding up your iPad to film the entire show, blocking the view of those behind. Just don’t.

If you want to drink and watch a band, the general admission beer garden to the right of the main stage allows you to glimpse the performance with your Heineken in hand.

GETTING HOME

If you forgot where you parked your car — well, we warned you…

You could Uber home, but expect extreme surge pricing after the festival ends to around 3 a.m. Don’t be surprised if the Uber back to your party pad 10 miles away is priced in the vicinity of $250.

If you don’t feel like going home, these are some likely spots to unwind:

• The pool at the Ace Hotel. The after-party (and use of pool) requires a wristband.
Vista Point on Highway 74. One of the best spots for sunrise … and it’s free.

• The Beer Hunter in La Quinta is a favorite among locals in the service industry. It’s got pool tables and it’s open until 2 a.m.

• Duck into one of the casinos and try your luck to win back some of that money you shelled out in the beer gardens.

Rosetta Getty Show Benefits the Palm Valley School in Rancho Mirage

Having attended several of the shows this week, all of which were wonderful, I'm looking forward to this one as well.

Rosetta Getty, by any measure, has had an enormously full life. The successful designer runs her namesake fashion label, is involved in multiple philanthropic activities, actively engages in the art world, and relishes her role as a mother to four children. She doesn’t shy away from the cliché of having it all.

“Sometimes having it all feels like just having a lot of work,” Getty says. “I try not to complain. Thank goodness I was able to have a big family, and I get to do what I love to do, and I’m married to a great guy, and I have a great community.”

Getty’s very full life begins at 6 a.m. with getting the kids off to school. Before she plunges into the world of running a fashion brand, she tries to take a moment to meditate and get centered. After the work at her day job is done, Getty focuses her energy on her nonprofit efforts, entertaining, and making time to see art and interact with artists.

No single part of her life exists in isolation. Her lifestyle and her passions guide her designs in both aesthetic and practical ways.

Party with Aarti at the Food and Wine Festival

Party with Aarti at the Food and Wine Festival

As a devotee of the Food Network and a former Spago employee for Wolfgang Puck, not to mention, just enjoying eating, I'm really looking forward to seeing Aarti.

Cooking isn’t just about making food, says Aarti Sequeira. It’s your invitation to the table.

The Los Angeles–based Sequeira is a warm, welcoming presence, and she embraces the camaraderie a plate of food provides. Cooking is an opportunity to connect, a time to break nan and nurture the people you love.

Sequeira’s path to the kitchen was a winding one.

Her career began at CNN when she was fresh out of journalism school. But the more she strove to be like her hero, Christiane Amanpour, the more Sequeira sought refuge over the stove. After she launched her own cooking show on YouTube, the home cook’s passion for food grew and her star rocketed.

In 2010, Sequeira officially traded her reporter’s notebook for a set of knives. She was the winner of the sixth season of Food Network’s reality show The Next Food Network Star and began hosting her own show, Aarti Party, focusing on easy ways to enhance traditionally American dishes with Indian flavors.

For her, the career change from journalist to cook has just meant a different way to help people make connections.

“[Making food] is more intimate than talking to someone, even one on one, because it’s a visceral connection — one made without words,” she says.

Sequeira has moved on to appear on a number of other cooking shows, including Chopped All-Stars and Cutthroat Kitchen, as well as Taste in Translation, which she hosted. She’s also the author of the cookbook Aarti Party: An American Kitchen with an Indian Soul.

Palm Springs Life spoke with Sequeira prior to her visit to Palm Desert Food & Wine.

PSL: Let’s say a home cook wants to try some Indian dishes but is unfamiliar with the cuisine. What advice do you have for someone cooking Indian recipes for the first time?

Aarti Sequeira: It’s the same as [with] any other recipe — read it all the way through before you start cooking and don’t enterprise. It’s usually a new style of cooking for people, so you need to trust your teacher.

PSL: What is your favorite recipe from your own cookbook?

AS: Kheema, the ground beef dish, is on my family’s table every two weeks. It’s quick, simple, and a huge hit with my girls!

PSL: Are there any specific ingredients that inspire you?

AS: Seasonal produce. I just can’t get enough.

PSL: If you’re having a few guests over, what’s a go-to dish you always prepare?

AS: Baba ghanoush. I don’t have great timing so I like having something for people to nosh on when they get to my house.

PSL: Was there one specific incident or moment when you realized you wanted to be a chef?

AS: I don’t consider myself a chef — I’ve never run a kitchen — but I remember the first moment someone hired me to cook on television. I couldn’t believe that I was (a) being asked to do it and (b) getting paid for it. It was surreal and such a gift.

BE PART OF AARTI’S PARTY

Aarti Sequeira will hold a demo in Ferguson Demonstration Tent No. 1 at 2:30 p.m. March 25, with a book signing on the patio.

She will hold a second demo and book signing in Ferguson Demonstration Tent No. 1 at 11:30 a.m. March 26, for VIP ticket holders only.

Dining Around The Desert: POM, Le Paon & Mastro’s Steakhouse

POM at Fantasy Springs Resort in Indio

The past weekend, I was fortunate enough to enjoy a show and a concert here in the desert. On Friday, my friend Nikki and I laughed it up with Kathy Griffin at Fantasy Springs Resort in Indio. Prior to the show, we dined at POM in the Resort, which is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

I enjoyed a Spinach Salad with grilled chicken, pear, blue cheese, walnuts, toasted sunflower seeds and a bacon, mustard dressing. Nikki had a Cuban-style sea bass with black beans, Spanish rice, latin cucumber slaw, cilantro, and achiote aioli.

We started off with a couple of the house specialty cocktails and then enjoyed a glass of wine. The service was friendly and efficient without being rushed, the food was good and reasonably priced. If you are going to a show, we recommend it.

Sheri, Vanessa and Dean

On Saturday I joined my good friend Dean and a group of friends at The MacCallum Theatre for Vanessa Williams in concert. One word; fabulous! Prior to the show, we enjoyed an assortment of appetizers at Le Paon off of El Paseo.

The tasty treats were Seared Sea Scallops with sauteed spinach and a cream saffron sauce, Baked Beef Steak Tomato topped with slices of cucumber & goat cheese with a balsamic vinaigrette, Deviled Eggs and Tournedos Neptune, a 4 oz broiled medallion of beef, topped with crabmeat & Bearnaise sauce.

Le Paon is the perfect place for great food in a civilized atmosphere with a charming host that always makes you feel welcome and an excellent piano player to boot!

73399 El Paseo, Mon-Sat, 5:30 til closing. 760-610-5320

After the wonderful Vanessa Williams, we headed to Mastro's and sat at a high top in the bar. Fitz, Wendy, Dean and I devoured Crab and Shrimp cocktails, the excellent bread basket, with my favorite, the pretzel bread with chunks of sea salt, a glass of wine and some berries and ice cream. What's not to like?

The place was hopping with live music and a very enthusiastic crowd, clearly having a great time.

Wolfgang Puck’s Spago Comes To the Indian Wells Tennis Garden

Wolfgang Puck’s Spago Comes To the Indian Wells Tennis Garden

Among the big additions at Stadium 1, which will be ready by this year's BNP Paribas Open, will be the arrival of Wolfgang Puck’s Spago, a 100-seat restaurant that will overlook Center Court from the 300 level. Puck opened the first Spago in Los Angeles, where I used to work back in the day, and it has won six Wine Spectator Grand Awards and has been awarded two Michelin Stars over 35 years. It will be the preeminent dining option in Stadium 1, and like Nobu, will mix world class dining with world class tennis.

But unlike Nobu and Chop House, some seating at Spago will be open to the court.

Stadium 1 will also feature roughly 20 new concessions and eateries, including BS Taqueria, a Los Angeles-based Mexican restaurant from Ray Garcia, Esquire’s 2015 Chef of the Year. BS Taqueria will offer a variation of tacos, cocktails, and specialty plates.

Dave’s Doghouse, a gourmet hot dog shop from Michelin Star-rated chef Josiah Citrin, will also debut, along with Cassell’s, a reinvented classic hamburger stand that originated in Los Angeles in 1948.

Melissa’s Produce, a fresh vegetable-focused offering, is another addition and will join local favorites Piero’s PizzaVino for pies and slices, and Sherman’s Deli for New York style sandwiches.
