New Restaurants Opening in the Palm Springs Area in 2018

As we move into 2018, I look forward to discovering fun, new places and bringing you my first-hand reviews. Here's some to plan on:

2017 gave the Coachella Valley many exciting restaurants, and you can bet the New Year will bring us more.

From veteran food legends to small business owners, many people are working day and night to make sure their new eateries have successful local openings next year.

And there’s nothing foodies love more than the taste of a new menu.

Here are some of the restaurants we’re looking forward to seeing open in 2018:

A farm-to-table experience that can’t be missed

Chef Daniel Villanueva is a staple of the Coachella Valley food scene. He showcases his farm-to-table, seasonal approach to cooking regularly during the Palm Desert Food & Wine festival, and his catering business is known to many.

After saying goodbye to his previous restaurant, Balisage Bistro in Palm Springs, at the end of 2016, Villanueva will be back with a new eatery, Beyond Balisage, in Cathedral City next year.

Friends and family were treated to a private tasting dinner earlier this month showcasing the new restaurant’s clean, seasonal menu. Among the offerings there was a salad with Spanish white anchovies, blue cheese, romaine organic egg yolks, Meyer lemon juice and heirloom tomatoes.

“When you support me, you support all of my farmers directly, as well,” Villanueva told dinner guests.

Villanueva said he hopes to open Beyond Balisage to the public sometime in January. The restaurant will be located at 68-327 E. Palm Canyon Drive in Cathedral City. For more information go to Beyond Balisage’s Facebook page.

When the new Hotel Paseo opens in Palm Desert next year, it will come with it a taste of Uptown Palm Springs.

The hotel’s new restaurant, AC3, as well as its bars, will be operated by two beloved Palm Springs restaurateurs — Copley’s on Palm Canyon’s owner and chef Andrew Copley and TRIO Restaurant’s owner Tony Marchese.

Back when news of the collaboration was first reported by The Desert Sun in April, Copley said the restaurant would focus on comfort food, fun flavors, and New American cuisine.

AC3 will open alongside the Hotel Paseo and will be open to the public every day. The hotel was originally set to open this fall, but construction delays moved to the opening date to sometime in January.

The Hotel Paseo will be located at 45350 Larkspur Lane in Palm Desert. For more information go to ac3palmdesert.com

Food, Wine, & Concerts Coming Soon at CareerBuilder Challenge Golf Tournament

Lagardere Sports signed on to operate the PGA Tour’s CareerBuilder Challenge just two months ago. Just two months from this week, Lagardere will unveil many of the changes it hopes to bring to the desert golf tournament.

That might seem like a small timeframe, but officials from Lagardere believe they will be able to showcase their philosophy for the CareerBuilder when the tournament is played Jan. 18-21, 2018, in La Quinta.

“We have been involved in the tournament, sort of consulting (in 2017), so we do know a lot about the tournament, which helps," said Jeff Sanders, the executive director of the CareerBuilder for Lagardere. “There’s no doubt we have a short four months and we are halfway there.”

Sanders and tournament director Pat McCabe both said they are happy with tournament preparations two months out from the 59th annual event, even as they try to expand the focus of the event from a PGA Tour event to a community event featuring concerts, food and beverages.

“If you are running a golf tournament and you are basing everything on golf, and you are not one of the big tournaments, you better have some other elements,” Sanders said. “What we have found is the golf fan, the Golf Channel viewer, will come out and watch golf. We want all the other people to come out.”

Sanders, who has a home in La Quinta and who played in the tournament's pro-am six times in the 1980s, openly says the model Lagardere is bringing to the CareerBuilder is the same model the company has used the last two years in operating the Safeway Open in Napa, the opening event of the PGA Tour’s wrap-around season in October.

That model includes offering upgraded food, beer and spirits and concerts for a single-day ticket price. It also includes continuing to focus on the $5.9 million tournament, which will again feature World Golf Hall of Famer and two-time desert winner Phil Mickelson as event ambassador.

“Certainly, we are comfortable and confident that the golf fan is going to come, just due to the fact that it is 156 of the best players in the world,” McCabe said. “As Jeff mentions, all this great stuff, food, wine, concerts, we can only control what happens outside the ropes. What we want to do is focus on that. It has been about golf here for a long time, but Phil Mickelson, 42-time champion, winningest player in President Cup history and he plays maybe 20 events of the 49 in a year, we’ve very fortunate for him to be on the list."

Hudson Swafford is the defending champion of the CareerBuilder Challenge, earning his first tour win at the event last January on the Stadium Course at PGA West.

Changes coming to this year’s tournament include two concerts, one Friday of tournament week and one Saturday, to be held on the driving range at PGA West.

The tournament is also debuting a new 8,500-square-foot fan pavilion, sponsored by Von’s, overlooking the 18th green of the Stadium Course. Sanders said another important change will be eliminating upgraded tickets for certain on-course hospitality tents, opening those tents to anyone with a ticket to the tournament.

“We are going to open ourselves up to the community and let everyone come in for $30 (pre-sale single-day ticket price), watch Phil Mickelson play golf, go into the 18th green, air-conditioned, first-class Von’s Fan Pavilion, and then go to a concert,” Sanders said. “We want to send a message for everyone to come to this event and have fun. Come out and watch Phil and the other 155 great players, go into the Von’s Pavilion, get yourself a glass of wine or a cocktail, get yourself a nice meal.”

The bands for the two concerts will be announced soon, Sanders said, as will a new presenting sponsor for the tournament. CareerBuilder continues as the tournament’s title sponsor for the third year of its six-year deal with the PGA Tour.

Sanders added that he hopes the tournament will find an identity it has been lacking with the coming changes, and that one of those identities will to be strongly identified with the city of La Quinta. The tournament is played on the Stadium and Jack Nicklaus Tournament courses at PGA West in La Quinta and La Quinta Country Club.

“We want this to be the La Quinta event,” Sanders said. “Indian Wells is tennis, Indio is concerts, music, and La Quinta is PGA Tour golf. This is La Quinta’s golf tournament.”

Dough-nut disturb because your wildest pastry fantasies are about to come true.

Thanks to an objectively sweet promotion from the J.W. Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa in Palm Desert, Calif., guests can now have a whopping 10-pound pink doughnut delivered straight to their door. As the main event of the hotel’s new $219 “Donut Disturb” package, the hefty treat, which measures three feet wide by a foot high, will be wheeled straight to the room with a side of milkshakes when guests are ready for a serious sugar high.

While the lines are fine as to whether the confection is technically a doughnut or a cake, FoodBeast reports that the layers of Tahitian vanilla cake, cream and raspberry jelly smothered with pink cream frosting, macaron crisps and sprinkles classify it as “Homer Simpson’s version of heaven.”

Included with the purchase of the Donut Disturb package, guests also receive a $50 hotel credit for the spa, dining, or golfing — though it would likely prove difficult to get up from the couch, let alone golf, after chowing down on the doughnut.

Unknown-1

For context, the average doughnut weighs about 1.7 ounces, meaning that you’d have to eat about 95 donuts to equal this 10 pounder, but apparently, the chefs didn’t stop at just 10 pounds when launching the promotion. In celebration of the Donut Disturb package, the hotel baked a massive 100-pound version of the frosted doughnut, according to KMR.

“I couldn’t find a doughnut of this proportion anywhere on the planet. So maybe we should have brought Guinness (World Records) in just to see if we’re actually making a record here today,” said executive chef Peter Smith.

When eyeing up the mammoth treat — that takes 3-4 people to move — one hotel guest from Australia couldn’t resist gushing. “It looks like unreal, it looks like it’s fake, it looks so amazing.”

Hacienda San Angel, Puerta Vallarta

Hacienda San Angel Gourmet

I recently spent some time with friends in Puerta Vallarta and since one tends to see the same people that come to our lovely valley all around the world, I thought I'd share this unique restaurant.

The highlight of our trip was at the beautiful, Hacienda San Angel.

Hacienda San Angel creates memorable upscale Mexican and international meals at Hacienda San Angel Gourmet, the hotel’s highly regarded, full-service roof top restaurant. A superbly elegant and scenic experience, Hacienda San Angel Gourmet is open to hotel guests and the public for dinner and a seasonal Sunday brunch, both by reservation only. Patrons enjoy 180-degree views of the town, azure Banderas Bay and Puerto Vallarta’s evening fireworks display.

A past filled with glamour and romance has led to a present brimming with intimate sophistication at Hacienda San Angel. Though this one-of-a-kind hotel gem has changed over time, its spirit of indulgence, passion and subdued elegance lives on.

The late Richard Burton purchased the Hacienda’s main villa as a Valentine’s Day gift for his wife, Susan in 1977, after falling in love with Puerto Vallarta as he filmed John Huston’s The Night of the Iguana there in the mid 1960’s. The cult classic film put Puerto Vallarta on the map as a favorite vacation spot for the international glitterati, including Burton’s ex, Elizabeth Taylor, who owned a house mere blocks away from Susan’s. Perched on the hillside above the famed Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe Church, the villa, aptly named Casa Bur-Sus, embodied coastal charm and Mexican architectural tradition.

Sneak Peek: Kimpton’s Latest Resort Brings Modern Luxury to Palm Springs

Sneak Peek: Kimpton’s Latest Resort Brings Modern Luxury to Palm Springs

The sleek hotel will boast some of the best views—and the only rooftop pool—in town.

Dusty Palm Springs is in the midst of a major revitalization, with a flux of new restaurants, boutiques, and luxurious hotel opening in the heart of the resort town. Leading the charge of city’s modern transformation is Kimpton The Rowan Palm Springs, which will be downtown Palm Spring’s first new build hotel to open in decades when it welcomes its inaugural set of guests in October.

The Rowan marks Kimpton’s first venture into the region, and the brand—which is largely known for luxurious urban oasis—has artfully mixed its city-slicker style with the midcentury modern high-desert design that has come to define Palm Springs. The resulting sleek seven-story building is filled with natural light—making the most of the dramatic San Jacinto Mountains and Coachella Valley vistas by employing windows at every turn. For an even better way to take in the sweeping views, guests of the hotel can head to the rooftop—which is the highest rooftop in the city, and the only one to feature a sparklingly blue pool.

When not out enjoying a cocktail from the comfort of a poolside deck lounger or grabbing a bite to eat at the elegant 4 Saints rooftop restaurants, guests can go hiking on one of the nearby trail heads or take refuge in the air-conditioned sanctuary of the Palm Springs Art museum—both just steps away from the property.

After busy days spent exploring and lounging by the pool, guests will retreat to one of the property’s stylish 153 rooms and suites. Each is outfitted in crisp whites and cool blues, and accented by sleek midcentury-inspired furnishings. Although many of the rooms feature balconies offer sweeping views of the desert outside, the double wrap-around balconies of the 1,500 square-foot Arlo Suite offer the best vantage point for watching the sun set over the valley.

Airstream, billiards suites among unique amenities of first hotel to open on El Paseo

Airstream, billiards suites among unique amenities of first hotel to open on El Paseo

A vintage Airstream trailer turned into a luxury suite, a restaurant run by local chefs, a spa, an entertainment stage and a gallery exhibiting the works of local artists are among the amenities to be featured in Palm Desert’s first hotel on El Paseo.

Hotel Paseo, the three-story, 150-room luxury boutique hotel – the city’s first new luxury hotel built in more than 30 years – is on schedule to open late October or early November, general manager Gil Reyes said.

Construction started on the $36 million hotel in November 2015.

Part of the Evolution Hospitality and Autograph Collection Hotels family which operates under the Marriott umbrella, Hotel Paseo will offer many unique features, Reyes said.

One thing about Autograph Collection Hotels is that they don't replicate each other in design.

“Each has its own story to tell,” Reyes said.

For Hotel Paseo, the story is, “Find Your Path,” which lends itself to the immediate and surrounding area with a variety of restaurants, shopping, entertainment, hiking and other “adventure” options, all within a short distance of the hotel.

Built on a vacant lot at 45-400 Larkspur Lane, which for many years was home to Fashion Week El Paseo, the hotel is well situated across from the annual event’s current location – the top level of The Gardens on El Paseo parking garage.

“This is a great location,” Reyes said.

Leading a hard-hat tour of the construction site, he pointed to a large wooden crate against the north wall of the pool area.

“That’s the Airstream trailer,” Reyes said, which will serve as the hotel’s 150th room.

As plans for the hotel were being laid out, Marriott wanted to expand the size of the gym on the first floor, which meant loss of a room, he said.

Hotel owner and co-developer Robert Leach proposed putting a fully renovated and furnished Airstream on the property, turning it into a specialty suite that can have a variety of uses, Reyes said.

The main entrance is off of Larkspur Lane and takes guests right into the lobby area with check-in to their left and a spacious seating area to their right where the works of local artists will be exhibited on the north wall. The work will be rotated quarterly, Reyes said.

Three of the desert’s popular restaurateurs are teamed up to open AC3 restaurant and Bar, on the north end of the hotel which will be open to the public. With full bar, indoor and patio seating the restaurant will be able to seat about 200, Reyes said.

Also open to the public will be the hotel’s expansive spa with seven treatment rooms. The spa operator will be announced soon, he said.

The 2,000-square-foot outdoor area will have artificial lawn, a pool with three private cabanas, an in-ground whirlpool spa, café with bar, fire pit, stage for live performances plus bocce ball court, cornhole toss and shuffle board games. Outdoor movie screenings are also planned, Reyes said.

Reyes has worked in the hospitality industry for about 20 years, the past 11 in senior management positions. He was hired to run Hotel Paseo about three months ago, and he and his wife wasted no time relocating from Anaheim, buying a house in Palm Desert for them and their four children.

“I really want to be a part of the community,” Reyes said, adding he is already on the Palm Desert Area Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors.

Minus the restaurant, the hotel will employ up to 60 full- and part-time positions. Applications are being taken now for management positions and will be accepted for front line jobs starting at the end of August. Applications are available online at www.evolutionhospitality.com.

Room rates will range from the mid-$200s to $600 per night, Reyes said, depending on time of year and room size. In addition to the Airstream, eight other specialty suites include a “Billiards Suite” with billiards table, record player with a collection of old and new vinyl, wet bar and lounge area.

Rooms can now be booked online at www.hotelpaseo.com for dates starting in January. As construction continues and an opening date is solidified, fall dates can start to be booked, Reyes said.
