Movie Colony Community Overview
The Movie Colony is located just across Palm Canyon Drive from the Old Las Palmas neighborhood and close to the center of Palm Springs. It is named for the by-gone days when the stars of Hollywood escaped Los Angeles to the desert oasis of Palm Springs and built cottages, bungalows and a few estates.
The El Mirador Hotel (now the Desert Regional Medical Center) was a big draw for the Hollywood elite in the early days of The Movie Colony. Originally the hotel had 165 rooms and was advertised as "Palm Springs’ magnificent palace of splendor." More simply stated it was Palm Springs’ true luxury resort hotel.
The Movie Colony community offers an eclectic mix of 1920’s and 1930’s Spanish estates, ‘Mid-Century Modern’ and California ranch style architecture. Many of the Movie Colony homes are concealed from view by walls and landscapes. Movie Colony homes were mostly built from the 40’s through around 2000.
There are no HOA’s in the Palm Springs Movie Colony. Instead, The non-profit Movie Colony Neighborhood Organization is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
